Leave it to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to provide a lot of laughs and giggles when it comes to the 2024 Emmy Awards. Fey and Poehler took the stage on Monday night, offering up some quips while sitting in their “Weekend Update” set from Saturday Night Live.

“We’ve reached the stage in life where we’ll only present awards sitting down,” Fey said. Then, she and Poehler went on to name the nominees for Outstanding Live Variety Special. She even targeted the Academy Awards, saying, “The only show that’s longer than when they air Titanic with commercials on TBS, the Oscars.”

Fey and Poehler also cracked jokes on Chris Rock’s recent standup special Selective Outrage. Fey said, “Chris could be here tonight but if he wins we’ll accept on his behalf because we miss getting Emmys.” She also had a crack on Rihanna’s halftime show for Super Bowl LVII. Fey called it “the concert so good it got us all pregnant.”

Poehler got a couple of good shots in herself. One was at the 2023 Tony Awards, where Poehler said the show was “celebrating the best in musicals that were based on movies which will probably be movies again.”

Fey popped in and said that was fine while offering a quick promotion for Mean Girls. Poehler then referred to Elton John and his nominee, the Farewell From Dodger Stadium concert. John’s concert won the Emmy Award for him, giving John an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. That’s EGOT status.

Fey and Poehler are touring right now in their Tina Fey & Amy Poehler: Restless Leg Tour. The twosome were behind the Anchor Desk for their “Weekend Update” segment, which ran between 2004 and 2006. But this twosome has hosted the Golden Globes four times. The most recent time was back in 2021.

Poehler, 52, talked about being a friend with Fey on Sunday TODAY. She talked about it during the time after she and Poehler virtually hosted the Golden Globes in 2021.

Poehler Finds Similarities Between Her, Fey

“I think it’s rare and wonderful to meet somebody who’s your friend who also works the same way that you do. Because we kind of trained at the same places and work the same way it’s so easy,” Poehler said of Fey, 53.

“We share a very similar vocabulary — especially when you’re about to go do the Golden Globes or about to do live television for the first time or you’re trying something new it feels really good to have somebody who knows your timing [and] your rhythm.”

These comediennes have found a way to keep their long-time friendship alive. Fey and Poehler talked about it back in 2015 with Glamour Magazine, People reported.

“We don’t see each other very often,” Fey said. “That’s right,” Poehler said. “It’s like a good marriage. My mom always says it’s very important to have people in your life who knew you when. The older you get, the more you treasure that idea of someone knowing your family and where you came from, and being around during these times and these times.”

Poehler said neither one of them has sisters in their lives. They’ve instead “rented them.” “We found sisters,” Fey said.

Some viewers might have hoped these two had hosted Monday night’s show. Show host Anthony Anderson did a stellar job of keeping things moving along.
